The Running World
What exactly is running?
T are many questions that runners get asked. Most of the time, when people explain why they run, majority do it just for fun, or how long they run, the response they get is, “You’re crazy!” This response can be turned on you in no time at all, all you have to do is take the initial step out the door and you will never want to stop! So what exactly is running? Running is defined as, “to go quickly by moving the legs more rapidly than a walk and in such a manner that for an instant in each step, all or both feet are off the ground.”
Why do we run and how do we find it enjoyable?
Some people run to lose weight, stay in shape, for a thrill, to compete, to meet new people, to release stress and think about things, but most of all because they want too. It all comes down to you in the end and it is your choice. You have to remind yourself constantly why you are doing it. You do it because you want too, because you feel good, not necessarily during every run but when you are done. You feel stronger at the end with a better mood then when you started and big smile of satisfaction. Everyone has their off days; they don’t feel 100% but when you look down at your watch, or you hit the millage you were suppose to get in for the day, the feeling of success fills you and you feel like a champion; you proved to yourself that you could do it. To find running enjoyable you have to find the perfect running partner and the right pace. Enjoy your run; don’t push yourself to the point that you aren’t enjoying it. Some of the hardships you come across are planning when and what you’re going to eat before your run so you don’t cramp up or feel sick. The hardest part of all, which is not an excuse, is finding the time in your busy schedule to run and get the time in you need for it. Always make time for an hour of exercise in your day!
How do I start?
You always want to enjoy your first run. Don’t go to long and don’t push it too hard, start at a conversation pace. Tell yourself you are going for a 20 minute run, run for one minute, walk for one minute and continue it for the full 20 minutes. On your next run try and increase your run time and decrease your walk time. Once you are comfortable slowly add more time on until you are running the full time. Remember, you don’t have to be fast, never give up, coach yourself through it and push it to the end. You can do anything if you put your mind to it!
